What is Structural Integration?
Most clients come to Structural Integration from massage therapy and having experienced the tenderness that takes place in areas of the body seemingly unrelated to the main area of pain. If you’ve ever wondered how the body connects and refers pain from one area to another (hips to feet, for instance), then a Structural Integration series is for you.
While massage therapy focuses on your muscles, Structural Integration focuses on the protective layer called fascia.
Fascia is a connective tissue that covers every muscle and muscle fiber which forms an interconnected web ultimately responsible for the shape of the body. As a web, the whole suffers when a part of it is impacted. Improving the integrity of this tissue ultimately creates a healthier, more functional and flexible, system.
We are all shaped uniquely and each client presents with unique challenges and context; our parts (emotions, attitudes, behavioral patterns, and physical being) are all related in making up our whole. As we work on the physical alignment, it stands to reason that the other areas will ultimately be aligned as well.
How long does it take?
Structural Integration is performed in a series of ten sessions. Each session is approximately one hour. It is recommended that sessions are received, one per week, for ten consecutive weeks. Each session is administered progressively. In other words, each session builds upon the last until complete integration of the body is achieved.
This is done in an atmosphere of cooperation and combined effort between practitioner and client. The process includes balancing the body in segments and achieving alignment vertically, front-to-back, side-to-side, top-to-bottom, and inside-to-out. Structurally optimal positions are free to return through manipulation of the fascia, rotations, strains, and counterbalances of the connective tissue. You will be asked to pay special attention to your breathing and to tune in with how your body is feeling. For the process to be successful, it is important for communication to be as clear and concise as possible.
What do I need to bring?
Each session requires access to the skin; clients are asked to wear underwear (including bra for females). Bikinis, boxer briefs and sports bras are all acceptable.
What will I need to do?
The better hydrated you are, the better your connective tissue will respond. Drink plenty of pure water each day and especially before your appointments.
